Necklace with double-sided medallion pendant in 18k gold, in French Victorian "Egyptian Revival" style, depicting the portrait of the goddess Nekhbet, surrounded by an openwork lace-like halo composed of pearls and rose-cut diamonds. Dated around the 1880s, the portrait displays precise detailed workmanship. On the reverse of the medallion is a circle of hieroglyphs including notably a bird, a raven, a sphinx, and other motifs.
The border is adorned with pearls strung through a twisted wire, allowing them to turn in their settings. The rose-cut diamonds are set into the gold in four-lobed flower-shaped settings.
Nekhbet was the goddess of childbirth in the religion and mythology of ancient Egypt. She is generally depicted with a vulture headdress, or in the form of a being with a vulture's head and human body. She was considered the protectress of Upper Egypt and frequently appears in Victorian jewelry as part of the "Egyptian Revival" of the 1880s.
