Audemars Piguet x Swatch : la Royal Pop peut-elle devenir un phénomène ?

Audemars Piguet x Swatch: can Royal Pop become a phenomenon?

After Blancpain and Omega, it's with Audemars Piguet that Swatch wants to shake up the watchmaking industry. This time, the Swiss giant is tackling a true icon of luxury: the Royal Oak, by Audemars Piguet, renamed “Royal Pop”. Chot An unexpected collaboration blends the ultra-premium DNA of the Brassus manufacture with Swatch's pop, colourful and accessible approach. Between a masterful marketing coup and a genuine turning point for Swiss watchmaking, the Royal Pop could well become one of the most talked-about watch launches of the year.

A unique encounter between Swiss luxury and popular watchmaking

The idea seemed almost unthinkable just a few years ago. On one side, Audemars Piguet, maison independent, founded in 1875 and an absolute symbol of high-end sports watchmaking thanks to the Royal Oak conceived by Gérald GentaOn the other hand, Swatch, popular brand that became famous for its affordable, creative and colorful watches. However, this meeting now seems perfectly coherent in a sector where The boundaries between luxury and pop culture are becoming increasingly blurred.

This merger also reflects a profound evolution in the watch market. Major manufacturers are no longer solely focused on preserving an elitist image; they now want to reach a new generation of consumers—younger, more connected, and particularly receptive to event-based collaborations. Following the phenomenal success of the MoonSwatch, Swatch has demonstrated that an affordable watch can generate a level of excitement comparable to that of the most coveted sneakers.

Design, bioceramics and colors: what we know about the Royal Pop collection

Far from a simple minimalist adaptation of the Royal Oak, the two brands fully embrace an explosive aesthetic, designed to immediately attract attention and provoke the “wow” effect on social media.

Teased for several weeks, and officially unveiled by the brands on May 12, 2026, the 8 Royal Pop designs, each playing on a specific color palette and two different dial orientations, unsurprisingly feature the same design elements. the iconic visual codes of the Royal Oak, notably its octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet, but transposes them into a much more pop and experimental universe specific to Swatch.

The unveiled models feature bold, ultra-saturated colors, with electric hues that contrast sharply with Audemars Piguet's typically understated and ultra-premium image. This artistic direction gives the watch an almost futuristic identity, halfway between a timepiece and a statement fashion accessory.

As expected, Bioceramics plays a central role in the project. This material, which has become the signing of Swatch collaborations in recent yearsIt offers a very contemporary matte finish while allowing for particularly bold looks. The contrast between the legendary silhouette of the Royal Oak and this exuberant color palette creates an instantly recognizable result, designed to go viral from the very first Instagram posts.

But the real twist in this collaboration lies elsewhere: contrary to what everyone imagined, the Royal Pop is not a wristwatch. The officially released models exclusively take the form of Pocket watches, a totally unexpected choice that is already dividing watch enthusiastsSome fans are disappointed not to find an affordable and wearable version of the iconic Royal Oak, while others applaud this bold decision that avoids a simple copy. “cheap” of the original and brings a truly creative proposition.

This format opens the door to a multitude of ways to wear—or display—the watch. Of course, the Royal Pop can be used in the traditional way as a pocket watch, but the first examples seen on social media already show much more creative uses. Some plan to attach it to a belt loop, others to a bag or a chain like a fashion accessory. A few internet users even imagine hanging it from a car's rearview mirror or using it as a true lifestyle and decorative piece. Between timepiece, pop jewelry and fashion accessory, the Royal Pop deliberately blurs the lines.

Six models adopt a so-called configuration “Lépine”, with the crown positioned at 12 o'clock in the purest tradition of the classic pocket watch, while two versions “Soap” move the crown to 3 o'clock and add a small seconds counter, creating a silhouette closer to a future wrist adaptation.

Here are the different officially announced models:

  • Eight White : bright white case with multicoloured screws on the bezel, dial oriented in the Lépine version (crown at 12 o'clock).
  • Otto Rosso : a very bright pop pink variation, also in Lépine orientation.
  • Green Eight : intense green version with a very neon look, in Lépine configuration.
  • Blaue Acht : a mix of lemon green and electric blue, always with a Lépine orientation.
  • Orenji Hachi : navy blue and orange burst combination, particularly retro-futuristic, in a Lépine dial.
  • Ocho Negro : a more understated and portable black and white interpretation, also available in a Lépine version.
  • Lan Ba : Royal blue and light blue model with Savonnette orientation, crown at 3 o'clock and small seconds.
  • Otg Roz : the most extravagant version of the collection with a pink, yellow and turquoise mix inspired by pop art, also in Savonnette configuration.

Price, rarity, and speculation: what to expect after the release of the Royal Pop

The prices are located between 385 and 400 Swiss francs depending on the model, either largely above a classic Swatch, but infinitely more accessible than a genuine Royal Oak whose entry-level price starts at several tens of thousands of euros.

This pricing strategy could be enough to trigger a veritable tidal wave, even several days before its official release. Since the first official announcements, the hype surrounding the Royal Pop has been steadily growing on social media and within watch communities. On TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit, posts related to the collaboration are already racking up millions of views, and discussions are exploding around the various colors and this unique pocket watch format.

As with MoonSwatch launches, some enthusiasts are already mentioning the possibility of long queues outside physical stores.

The models will be Available for purchase this Saturday, May 16, 2026, in a selection of stores Swatch across major international capitals, as well as on the brand's official website. Some rumors also suggest flash sales in dedicated pop-up stores to transform the launch into a true cultural and media event.

The scarcity effect will obviously play a central role. Swatch has mastered the art of the limited launch, with controlled stock and selective distribution designed to fuel anticipation and frustration. It is therefore highly likely that the first pieces will quickly appear on resale platforms at prices far exceeding the retail price. Swatch and Audemars Piguet could well sign one of the most significant events of the year in the world of watchmaking.

How Swatch revolutionized watch collaborations

When Swatch and Omega With the unveiling of the MoonSwatch in 2022, the watch industry has literally changed its dimension. Inspired by the legendary Speedmaster Moonwatch, This collection, sold at a relatively affordable price, has created scenes rarely seen in the world of watches. Endless queues, global stock shortages and soaring prices on the secondary market.

With this strategy, Swatch has succeeded in democratizing models that were previously inaccessible to a large part of the public. The company has above all understood something essential: in an era dominated by social networks, desirability no longer depends solely on prestige or price, but on the ability to create a cultural phenomenon.

The partnership with Blancpain This dynamic was then confirmed. Even though the collaboration sparked more debate among purists, it proved that Swatch could transform any watch release into a global event. Every launch now becomes a collective experience, amplified by TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

This year, the Royal Pop seems to be pushing this logic even further. The Royal Oak probably remains one of the most iconic and desirable luxury sports watches in the world. Its design is instantly recognizable, and its market value has been steadily increasing for several years. By taking on such a legend, Swatch is no longer simply seeking to surprise: the brand aims to create a genuine media sensation.

Why Audemars Piguet is opening the Royal Oak universe for the first time

For Audemars Piguet, this collaboration represents a major strategic shift. Unlike other watchmaking houses, the Swiss manufacturer has always cultivated a very strict form of exclusivity around the Royal Oak. Classic models are often difficult to obtain, with waiting lists that can last several years.

The opening of this universe to Swatch shows that even the most prestigious brands must now contend with new market expectations. Young consumers often discover watchmaking through social media and viral collaborations. In this context, The Royal Pop could become a gateway to the Audemars Piguet universe for a whole new generation of enthusiasts.

This strategy also allows the brand to strengthen its cultural aura. For several years, Audemars Piguet has been cultivating connections with the worlds of music, sports, and contemporary art. This year, it has also chosen to return to one of the most prestigious watch fairs: Watches & Wonders, after several years of absence. A collaboration with Swatch is ultimately part of this desire to extend its influence beyond the traditional circle of wealthy collectors.

Naturally, this decision is not universally popular. Some enthusiasts fear the Royal Oak, now the ultimate symbol of sporty luxury, will become commonplace. Others, on the contrary, believe this initiative confirms the enormous cultural impact of the original model. One thing is certain: rarely has a mere rumor of a collaboration generated so much discussion in the watchmaking world. And you, what do you think?
