Important “négligée” necklace Art Deco branded Van Cleef & Arpels, Paris, circa 1920, illustrating the geometric elegance and refined restraint of the famous creations of the Maison in the 1920s, where a brilliant white diamond contrasts with a deep black onyx, all set on an architectural platinum structure.
The necklace opens with an old European-cut diamond collet-set at the center of a navette-shaped frame, itself surrounded by grain-set diamonds and framed by calibrated onyx panels. From this center, a tapering line of millegrain-set diamonds descends in the characteristic “négligée” style to suspend the principal stone: a luminous old European-cut diamond of approximately 3.00 carats, with approximate G-H color and VS1-VVS clarity, set in a bezel to form a freely articulated drop. Above, a matching old European-cut diamond of approximately one carat completes the composition, the diamonds totaling approximately 5.00 carats.
Retaining its rigorous historic proportions – high crown, small table, and open culet – the principal diamond is a brilliant, near-colorless stone and eye-clean, of a size rarely encountered. The openwork platinum, the fine millegrain details, and the bold contrast between the black and white of the diamonds and onyx are hallmarks of the finest Parisian jewelry of the Art Deco period.
