Clip brooch branded Van Cleef & Arpels, derived from the famous Lion Ébouriffé model, one of the most recognizable animal jewels in the Van Cleef & Arpels vocabulary and an emblematic example of the maison menagerie in the mid-20th century.
The lion is crafted in 18K yellow gold, its tousled mane composed of countless individual gold strands radiating in all directions, a characteristic treatment that gives the model its name.
Its face emerges from this halo of texture with understated character: two set emeralds as eyes, whose saturated green provides the only chromatic contrast in the piece, and a muzzle pavé-set with 14 single-cut diamonds, each approximately 0.03 carat, giving the lower part of the face a soft luminosity. Fine gold whiskers extend from either side, and its tail curves back along its haunches in the characteristic pose of the seated lion.
Its clip-brooch construction allows the piece to be worn on a lapel, scarf, beret, or evening dress with equal security, a practical refinement typical of French high jewelry of the period.
