Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Venus and Mars, standing in an embrace. Venus, goddess of love and beauty, is lightly draped in fabric, while her lover Mars, god of war, stands before her, creating an elegant composition on the oval medallion.
Based on a rare bronze intaglio from the late 1700s, we created a mold and cast the pendant in gold. We hand-carved the depth into the mold so that the details stand out on the contemporary medallion as beautifully as on the original antique intaglio, then carefully added a light patina by hand to the finished piece.
The intaglio used as a mold for this medallion is attributed to the workshop of James Tassie, dating to the late 18th century. Born in 1735, Tassie was a Scottish stone-cutter who invented a vitrified white paste, perfect for reproducing gemstones. Tassie received commissions throughout Europe, first from Catherine the Great of Russia, then from the Wedgwood factory, to create imitations of gemstones and finely carved intaglios. In 1773, most of the famous blue and white cameos in the Wedgwood catalog were cast from molds made by Tassie. The artist left behind a collection of more than 1,500 intricate art pieces. Many of Tassie’s intaglios were cast in glass paste or plaster, which could break over time. However, some were cast in bronze and have survived for centuries. These pieces are rare treasures that testify to Tassie’s incredible craftsmanship.
We love the imagery of classical revival present in James Tassie’s work, which often depicts scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. These myths speak of human nature in a way that makes them as evocative today as they were during the classical revival period in which James Tassie worked. The beauty of the images and the timelessness of the stories are what drew us to these intaglios and inspired us to revive this centuries-old art for contemporary jewelry. Just as Tassie revived these ancient images, we are reviving Tassie’s work. Tradition is part of what makes the art of jewelry so meaningful.
