This 14-karat gold pendant is part of the Signature Collection and was cast from a real wishbone.
Although this tradition is popular in the United States, the history of the wishbone dates back to the ancient Etruscans, who considered birds to be oracles. They would stroke the dried "fercula" (collarbone) while making wishes. The tradition passed to ancient Rome, where lucky bones were so sought after that people began breaking them in two; the expressions "lucky break" and "can’t catch a break" date back to the Romans. The tradition was then transmitted via England, and then to the United States, where it remains a cherished Thanksgiving ritual.
This pendant is anatomically accurate: the mold was made from the fercula of a Cornish hen, whose small size is perfect for a pendant. The bone was sanded and coated with gesso, then a hole was carved at the top to create a bail. The wishbone was then made in 14-karat gold and the gold was burnished to achieve a matte finish reminiscent of bone.
