These long Rococo dangling earrings, made in the Southern Netherlands around 1750, combine airy openwork in gold with the pale glow of diamonds. Eight table-cut diamonds form the main accents, surrounded by 48 rose-cut diamonds and senailles, whose irregular facets offer a soft sparkle, as if by candlelight. They are approximately 275 years old and have been preserved in remarkable condition. Their elongated construction moves gracefully when worn, while the closed settings and delicate scroll motifs preserve the refinement and character of mid-18th-century craftsmanship.

  • Type of jewelry: long dangling earrings.
  • Condition: very good condition.
  • Country of origin: probably Southern Netherlands, possibly Flemish or Brabant. Although no identifiable assay or control mark is present, the construction, openwork decoration, and use of gold suggest an origin in the Southern Netherlands.
  • Style: Rococo jewelry. This 18th-century style developed in France around 1730, after the Baroque period, and remained influential until around 1770. It is characterized by light and ornamental compositions, often incorporating asymmetrical openwork, rocaille forms, C- and S-scrolls, ribbon knots, flowers, foliage, and tendrils. In jewelry, diamonds were frequently set in silver to enhance their whiteness, while gold was used for the underlying structure and decorative openwork. Developed under Louis XV and associated with French court culture, aristocratic salons, and patrons such as Madame de Pompadour, Rococo spread to Italy, Germany, and Austria, and to a lesser extent England. Compared to the symmetry and grandeur of the Baroque style, it is generally lighter, more intimate, more playful, and more ornamental.
  • Period: circa 1750.
  • Material: 14K red gold and details in silver, tested with a touchstone.
  • Technique: the diamonds are mounted in closed settings, many probably on foil, a technique used to enhance their brilliance and reflect light through the stones.
  • Diamonds: eight table-cut diamonds; 48 rose-cut diamonds and senailles. A senaille is a simplified rose-cut diamond, generally consisting of a small fragment of diamond with only a few polished facets. The weights of these old-cut diamonds are not known, which is usual in the trade of antique jewelry, as their irregular shapes and closed settings prevent reliable measurement without removing them from the jewel.
  • Total number of diamonds: 56 pieces.
  • All diamonds in our antique and vintage antique jewelry, regardless of their cut or shape, are verified as natural by the IJGC laboratory.
  • Birthstone: diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.
  • Hallmarks: presence of a maker's mark not yet identified, in the form of a solid pellet above the capital letter D in a vertical rectangular punch. No identifiable assay or control mark is present.
  • Dimensions: height 8.73 cm (3.44 inches).
  • Weight: 17.70 g (11.38 dwt).
