At the beginning of the 19th century, ancient archaeological discoveries influenced and introduced what is known as "Egyptian Revival style jewelry." The first period of the Egyptian Revival began around the 1820s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins at that time. Images such as the scarab, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphs became popular motifs in fashion. The pieces were often made from a material known as "Egyptian paste" or "faience," the oldest form of glazed ceramic without clay, generally found in a range of blues and greens.
In the 1920s, a new unearthing of treasures made the trend popular again. This scarab pendant dates from that time, the third period of the Egyptian Revival. The scarab is a brown faience bead with beige tones in its recesses, which outline the shape of the beetle. Hieroglyphs appear on the back of the scarab. At the bottom of the scarab is a round 14-carat gold ball, extended by a wire passing through the bead and forming a bail at the top.
- Pendant length: 1" (from the bottom of the ball to the top of the bail)
- Scarab dimensions: 11/16" x 1/2"
- Bail dimensions: 5 mm
- Weight: 2.55 g
- Gold: unmarked, acid tested (mention removed)
The scarab is in excellent condition for its age and ready to be worn on a chain of your choice. Other sizes and colors of scarab jewelry are available.
