This Egyptian Revival-style pendant features a faience scarab, set in a decorative 14K gold Etruscan Revival-style mount. Due to the texture and visible crackle on the faience scarab (especially on the back of the piece, where there are symbols resembling hieroglyphs), the scarab itself is dated to ancient Egypt. The decorative mount, in the Etruscan Revival style, was added around the 1920s and brings a beautiful element to the pendant. The mount consists of a lattice of twisted wires that wraps around the scarab to create a detailed border.
"Faience," also known as Egyptian paste, is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic, and is often found in a range of blue, green, and brown colors.
At the beginning of the 19th century, ancient archaeological discoveries influenced and introduced what is known as "Egyptian Revival jewelry." The first period of Egyptian Revival began around the 1800s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins at that time. Images such as the scarab, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphs became popular motifs in fashion. In the 1890s, a new discovery of treasures in the Suez Canal made the trend popular again. The Egyptian Revival style flourished again in the 1920s and coincided with the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb.
