This Etruscan revival pendant in 18K gold has been tastefully converted from a horizontal bar brooch into a vertical pendant.
The design features a diagonal band composed of turquoise and pearls, with lovely wirework and bead granulation. The two pearls measure 1.5 mm and the three turquoise stones are about 2 mm. The surface of the pendant displays a carefully textured finish, almost like the surface of real gold nuggets. This texture was achieved by applying heated gold onto gold.
Etruscan revival jewelry has a rich and interesting history. In the early 1800s, a major excavation of Etruscan tombs took place outside Rome. In these tombs were found original Etruscan jewelry pieces. The Etruscans were master craftsmen: they created striking pieces using gold wirework and beading, colorful gemstones, and glass. News of these excavations and the treasures they contained spread throughout Europe. Etruscan-style jewelry captivated the public imagination, and jewelers quickly became interested in these designs. Etruscan revival jewelry gained popularity during the Victorian era. Inspired by the Etruscans, jewelers adopted wirework, beading, filigree, and granulation.
The bail measures 2.8 mm x 4 mm and is suitable for different chain sizes. The pendant measures 1 1/2" x 1/4" and weighs 3.1 g. One of the pearls shows slight crazing. The piece is not hallmarked.
