This bronze coin, also called folis, dates from the Byzantine era. Byzantine coins are among the most difficult and complex to identify. This coin features the image of an emperor on the obverse; on the reverse is an inscription in Arabic, demonstrating that it embraces both the Eastern and Western worlds. The coin most likely dates from after the capture of Constantinople by the Arabs, that is, after the year 900.
The coin is surrounded by a hand-hammered 14K white gold setting, which highlights the bronze. This setting is part of Kirsten’s Corner's signature designs.
- Weight: 10.8 g
- Diameter: 35 mm
- Thickness of the hammered white gold border: 2.5 mm
- Oval bail: 8 mm x 6 mm (fits a wide chain)
The coin displays a beautiful patina with golden brown and blackened tones.
The Byzantine Empire is also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantium. It was the continuation of the Roman Empire in its eastern provinces during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, when its capital was Constantinople.
We have other jewelry with ancient coins in our collection. The pendant is photographed here with an ancient drachma in silver featuring Medusa on a 14K gold setting and an ancient tetradrachm in silver of the Scythian king Azes II on a 14K gold setting.
