Around 103-76 BC, this ancient coin known as the “widow’s mite” is famous for its biblical connotations, as it was a form of currency used during the time of Jesus. The bronze coin is elegantly set in a simple bezel that follows the shape of the coin. One side features an 8-pointed star; the other shows an off-center struck anchor, a common trait of many ancient coins. The irregular shape of the coin is appreciated for its organic character. Ancient coins like this varied in shape, and the nature of the strikes was dictated by the form of each unique coin.
The “widow’s mite” has historical significance and is a symbol of sacrifice and generosity. It is mentioned in Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4. In the story, Jesus observes a poor widow giving two coins, worth only a few cents. He tells his disciples: “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Historians have come to understand that the “widow’s mite” (also called lepton) would be the low-value coin to which Jesus was referring. This ancient coin is both a fascinating piece of history and a powerful symbol of faith.
