Brought back from a trip to London, this delicate Essex crystal pendant features a rock crystal carved with the image of a chimney sweep holding a ladder, dressed in a frock coat and a top hat. The chimney sweep is known as a symbol of good luck, as he is believed to sweep away bad luck and clear the way for fortune. Our favorite chimney sweep is the one from Mary Poppins, and this one reminds us of the famous rooftop dance scene.
The pendant features very fine details: it is an intaglio on inverted crystal, which means the intaglio is carved at the back of the stone and can be seen through the front of the crystal. Seen from the side, you can make out the depth of the carving, and the chimney sweep appears three-dimensional inside the crystal. The crystal is backed by a piece of mother-of-pearl that adds extra luster and is traditional in Edwardian Essex crystal jewelry. The stone is set in a closed 14k gold setting, with a round bail.
The pendant measures 5/8” wide and has a 6 mm bail. Weight: 2.9 g. Tested as 14k gold.
