Dating from the Edwardian era, this Maltese cross is made in platinum and set with 85 Old Mine and Old European cut diamonds. The diamonds are grain-set, all with high tables, for a luminous and sparkling presence. A milgrain border highlights the outer contour of the cross. At the center is a natural black pearl, very rare for the period, with beautiful purple and gray hues. On the reverse, you can see the cage setting that holds each diamond individually, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship. The pendant is attached to a matching bail set with a diamond and suspended from a chain in platinum.
The Maltese cross is an ancient symbol of Byzantine origin dating back to the 6th century. It represents protection, honor, and courage. The eight points of the cross represent the eight vows of the Knights Hospitaller: to live in truth, have faith, repent of sins, show humility, fight for justice, be merciful, show sincerity, and endure persecution.
The pendant contains 85 natural antique diamonds in Old Mine and Old European cuts. They are G-H color and VS1-SI2 clarity. They measure from 1 to 2.5 mm and weigh approximately 1.3 carats in total. The pendant measures 1" wide. The chain is 17" long. The piece weighs 8.54 g.
Circa 1910.
