The telescopic pencil was widely produced from the 1870s to the 1890s and was known as a "magic pencil" because of its telescopic operation. The pencil’s internal mechanisms are quite complex; a diagram helps one imagine how they work. The Victorians had an object for every purpose, and the magic pencil would have been worn on a watch chain.
The pencil lengthens by pulling the back of the cylinder, then retracts to become more compact. By turning the tip of the pencil, the lead advances for writing. Magic pencils existed in many designs, from the simplest to the most ornate. This one is elegant and streamlined, with a simple cylindrical cap. The extension features guilloché decoration and a hallmark indicating 14K gold. The pendant has a lovely large bail that can fit a thicker chain or a lobster clasp.
The pencil measures 2 1/2 inches when closed and extends to 4 inches, not including the bail, which measures 8.65 x 6.85 mm. The pencil is quite substantial and weighs 18.65 g. Hallmarked 14K. It wears very well on a simple chain and can be worn as a pendant by either a man or a woman. It is a very lovely gift and a perfect masculine antique.
