This 14K gold pendant in the shape of a keystone is rich in symbolism. Dated around 1910, this charm comes from the Royal Arch Masonry chapter of the Freemasons. The famous symbol of the square and compasses is found at the center of the pendant, framed by the letters HTWWTKS. The details are hand-carved in 14K gold and decorated with blue, black, and white enamel.
The pendant is shaped like a keystone, the topmost piece of an arch that makes it structurally sound and supports the entire structure. The Royal Arch chapter is one of the highest degrees of Freemasonry, and the keystone is worn as a mark of a high fraternal order. It is generally associated with the letters HTWWTKS, meaning "Hiram, son of the widow, sent to King Solomon." This is a reference to the legend of Hiram, an architect who defended Solomon's Temple against evil.
The square and compasses are among the most universally recognized Masonic symbols. The square, a tool used to achieve right angles and solid constructions, is a symbol of morality. The compasses, used to draw perfect circles, symbolize setting limits to desires in order to maintain the balance and moderation necessary for an upright life. The "G" represents God, or the "Great Architect of the Universe," as well as geometry and the intricate design of all things.
