This 18-carat yellow gold pendant celebrates the timeless elegance of the cameo, a true icon of distinctive jewelry. At its center, an authentic cameo carved on shell reveals the delicate profile of a woman whose hair is adorned with flowers, crafted with great finesse. The details of the face, curls, and drapery reveal all the artisanal expertise characteristic of this miniature art. The yellow gold setting surrounds the cameo with an openwork design featuring scalloped motifs. This delicately crafted border evokes the lace-like spirit dear to antique jewelry. The art of the cameo dates back to Antiquity, but truly flourished in the 19th century, particularly during the Second Empire. At that time, upper-class travelers brought back these precious carvings from Italy as souvenirs of their Grand Tour. The region of Torre del Greco, near Naples, then became famous for its expertise in shell carving. The artisans used the different natural layers of the material to create these relief portraits. Indeed, a light layer was used for the face and a darker layer for the background. This natural contrast gives the motif all its depth without any added color.
