The Atomium building was constructed in 1958 as the main pavilion and centerpiece of the Brussels World’s Fair. Designed by architects André and Jean Polak, the building consists of nine metallic spheres forming the atoms of a crystalline molecule. Its modernist design was an ode to the atomic age of the 1950s, when advances in nuclear physics were shaping the scientific landscape. Today, the Atomium is one of Brussels’ most popular tourist attractions and an iconic symbol of Belgium.
Made of 14K gold, this vintage pendant is a miniature version of the historic building and a symbol of scientific achievement, a perfect piece for a scientist or science enthusiast. It measures 3/4” x 5/8”, with an additional bail measuring 3.5 x 6 mm. It weighs 3.55 g. Marked 585 on the bail for 14K gold. Circa 1970s.
