Incredible hair comb, tiara, made of horn with a tortoiseshell imitation coating, topped with a gilded metal element adorned with five real scarabs.
Period: 19th century, Empire style, Egyptomania.

Condition: slight oxidation and micro-scratches on the gilded parts and a missing horn on one tooth, see photos.
Did you know that the Egyptomania of the First Empire has its origins in various travel accounts published at the beginning of the 19th century? Following the publication, among others, of "Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte" by V. Denon in 1802, women adorned themselves with jewelry inspired by ancient Egypt: scarabs, sphinxes, and pyramids embellished the outfits of these ladies.
The scarab, a symbol of resurrection, is particularly popular, and it is even possible to see real ones set in jewelry, as here on this incredible comb.
