Created as part of our signature collection, this 14k gold intaglio medallion depicts Cupid sitting atop a bow and quiver. Cupid, god of love and attraction, draws his bow, ready to shoot his arrow. Below him are undulating clouds that Cupid rides as if on a ship. The image is highlighted by a border of three lines.

From a rare bronze intaglio from the late 1700s, a mold was made and then the pendant was cast in gold. Depth was hand-carved into the mold to bring out the details on the contemporary medallion, then a slight patina was hand-applied to the finished piece.

The intaglio used as a mold for this medallion is attributed to the workshop of James Tassie, towards the end of the 18th century. Born in 1735, Tassie was a Scottish stonecutter who invented a white, glassy paste ideal for reproducing precious stones. Tassie was sought after throughout Europe, first by Catherine the Great of Russia, then by the Wedgwood manufactory, to create imitations of gems and finely carved intaglios. In 1773, most of the famous blue and white cameos in the Wedgwood catalog were cast from molds made by Tassie. The artist left a collection of more than 15,800 detailed artworks. Many of his intaglios were molded in glass paste or plaster, which could break over time. However, some were molded in bronze and have thus survived for centuries. These pieces are rare treasures that bear witness to Tassie's talent.

We love the imagery of neoclassicism present in the work of James Tassie, which often depicts scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. These myths speak of human nature in a way that remains evocative today, just as it did in the neoclassical era in which James Tassie worked. The beauty of the images and the timeless nature of the stories drew us to these intaglios and inspired us to revive this centuries-old art in contemporary jewelry. Just as Tassie revived these ancient images, we are reviving his work. Tradition is part of what makes the art of jewelry so meaningful.
