Lorgnettes were a fashionable accessory in high society. This 14K gold pair, dating from the Edwardian era, features a minimalist design: simple, classic, with clean lines, excellent functioning, and a delicate zigzag pattern engraved on the handle. They can be worn on a chain or clipped to a dog clip for an elegant interpretation of this classic antique item.
Lorgnettes are glasses with a handle, meant to be held up to the face rather than worn on the ears. Dating from the 17th century, they were more often worn as jewelry than used for vision, and were frequently seen at masquerade balls and the opera. The etymology of the word "lorgnette" is evocative: it derives from the French word "lorgner," meaning to look out of the corner of one's eye, and "lorgnette" is also the French word for a ship captain's spyglass.
This lorgnette is in excellent condition: it opens with a click, with a remarkable mechanism, and has no scratches on the lenses. It folds with a spring action, with a large opening at the end allowing it to be worn on a chain. A "M" hallmark is present on the bridge. Acid tested, 14K gold. Weight: 18 g. Closed dimensions: 3 1/4” x 1 11/16”.
