Old mine diamond drop earrings by Leitão & Irmão, museum quality.
Step into the world of elegance of the European courts with this rare collector’s treasure branded Leitão & Irmão, jewelers to the Crown of Portugal. An exceptional pair of antique Belle Époque drop earrings, preserved in its original Leitão & Irmão case, lined with velvet and adorned with gilt decoration, a complete jewel illustrating the grandeur and artistry once reserved for the high aristocracy.
Each earring is composed of an old-cut diamond surmount of approximately 1.00 carat, beautifully matched, suspending an impressive oval old mine-cut diamond certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA):
- 5.01 carats, color I, clarity VS2, exceptional spread and antique fire.
- 4.92 carats, color J, clarity VS2, a perfectly complementary earring, matching its counterpart in presence and brilliance.
With the surmount diamonds, the total weight reaches approximately 11.93 carats of antique diamonds, displaying the broad flashes and lively scintillation of hand-cut stones.
Faithful to the expert techniques of the Lisbon workshops of the maison, the earrings feature a mixed precious-metal construction: platinum collets form a refined setting that maximizes light entry, while the gold elements provide structural richness and antique charm. The articulated drops catch the light with every movement, a jewel of display for the modern connoisseur.
A jewel reserved for an elite. Although no individual owner is documented, a jewel of this caliber speaks for itself. During the Belle Époque, diamonds of this size and clarity were reserved for the wealthiest clients, and large eye-clean oval old mine diamonds were rarer still, as few crystals could yield antique stones of this scale and purity. Made and branded by Leitão & Irmão and preserved in its original case, this pair is unquestionably an important jewel of its time, intended for a clientele of great wealth.
A legacy of royal patronage. Since 1822, Leitão & Irmão has been synonymous with Portuguese excellence in jewelry and silverwork. Appointed silversmith to the imperial Maison of Brazil by Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1872, then jewelers to the Crown of King Dom Luís I of Portugal in 1887, the Maison created jewels for the highest European aristocracy. branded creations by Leitão & Irmão remain among the rarest treasures of Portuguese jewelry, especially when preserved in their original case. The combination of two GIA certified oval old mine diamonds approaching five carats each makes these earrings a major acquisition for collectors of historic jewelry, important diamonds, and European royal craftsmanship.
