Late Victorian diamond bee brooch, ruby thorax and emerald eyes
Around 1890, a late Victorian style bee brooch in 18-carat rose gold, with wings set with silver. The body and four wings are beautifully set with rose-cut diamonds. A ruby adorns the thorax, while two emerald eyes give it a lively and attentive look. The abdomen, striped with diamonds, is finely articulated and features slender legs. In Victorian jewelry, the bee was often seen as a symbol of hard work and devotion, a sweetness earned rather than given. A small brooch full of character.

Style
Victorian decorative art refers to the artistic style developed during the Victorian era. This period is characterized by an eclectic revival of historical styles and the introduction of intercultural influences from the Middle East and Asia in furniture, accessories, and interior decoration. Victorian design is often seen as having succumbed to an unfortunate excess of ornamentation. The Arts and Crafts movement, the aesthetic movement, the Anglo-Japanese style, and Art Nouveau all have their origins at the end of the Victorian era.

Maker's marks
Although it bears a typical French control mark representing an owl, we cannot be sure that it is actually French because the owl was also used for finished items that were brought in to be examined by the French assay office (the eagle's head was used for unfinished items brought in).
