This handmade pendant medallion in 18k gold, diamonds, and guilloché enamel was designed by Victor Mayer for Fabergé. The cobalt blue enamel is transparent and reveals intricate engravings beneath the guilloché. The engravings feature a chevron pattern with an oval frame at the center, which adds depth and variations to the shades of cobalt blue. Along the oval frame, small gold details representing flowers and crosses can be seen. Upon examination, it is evident that a transparent enamel has been applied over the gold, a feat of craftsmanship allowing the blue enamel and transparent enamel to meet with precision.
At the center of the medallion, a gold cross is adorned with natural grain-set diamonds, a traditional motif used in historical Fabergé jewelry. The medallion opens to hold two oval photos. It is attached to an 18k gold bail with an elegant split design, opening and closing to clip onto a chain. Numbered piece 27/200, this medallion is produced in a very limited series.
The creator Victor Mayer was commissioned to produce pieces bearing the Fabergé hallmark for two decades and was appointed the sole master goldsmith Fabergé from 1989 to 2009. Pieces from this period are marked with the letters "VM" and each piece is numbered. Victor Mayer was founded in 1890, and the German company made egg-shaped pendants inspired by Fabergé in the early 1900s. Over the following century, the company gained a reputation as a master in enameling and guilloché engraving, and many exclusive brands entrusted it with the production of their most elegant pieces. Victor Mayer created numerous complex and sophisticated jewels and objets d'art during his collaboration with Fabergé, some of which were included in the Fabergé exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in 1996.
