These elegant Victorian-era drop earrings in piqué are inlaid with gold and silver, featuring a beautiful floral bouquet motif. Suspended from a gold ball, a scalloped leaf-shaped pendant swings, creating a pair of earrings with warm tones.
Piqué, a technique consisting of inlaying precious metals into tortoiseshell, was introduced to England by the Huguenots when they were expelled from France in the 17th century. The term "piqué," meaning "to pierce," refers to the process of inlaying gold and silver into heated tortoiseshell to create beautiful floral and leaf motifs, as well as geometric designs. This technique reached its peak during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is a process and art now lost; finding a matched pair of earrings from this period is rare.
- Each earring is suspended from a 14-karat gold lever-back hook (more recent addition).
- Dimensions: 1 1/4” from the top of the hook to the lowest point of the leaf shape; 3/4” at the widest.
- Inlays: 14-karat gold and silver floral motif.
- Condition: no damage to the gold piqué inlays; excellent condition.
- Total weight: 4 g.
- Circa 1880.
