Superb pair of Victorian-era cameo earrings in vulcanite, set in a 14-carat yellow gold surround. The vulcanite is jet black and in very good condition. The portraits of Victorian women depicted on the earrings are in high relief and show very fine details.
At the end of the Victorian era, this type of material was very popular for making jewelry. Black was an elegant color, and not just a mourning ornament, and Queen Victoria greatly influenced this trend.
The earrings are for pierced ears; they measure about 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch with the gold wire hook. On the back, you can see the artisanal process and how the vulcanite was used with a mold to create these earrings.
Vulcanite was sometimes called ebonite. Discovered around 1839, it was mainly used for jewelry. It is a compound of rubber hardened by chemicals and heat. It can be polished like jet, and these earrings have a beautiful shine.
