Dating from the Edwardian era, this large rhinoceros beetle brooch is set with rose-cut diamonds on an 18k gold and silver sterling mount. The insect's head and antennae are highlighted by stylized floral diamond motifs. At the center of the head is a large rose-cut diamond, surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds, with two ruby cabochons for the eyes. The insect's abdomen is made of a moon-shaped carved onyx, perfectly fitted to the setting. The black of the onyx is enhanced by a darkened silver patina; the diamonds sparkle in contrast. The six legs are in 18k gold and their ends finish in stylized loops, a design repeated throughout the piece.
The brooch is crafted with remarkable attention to detail. The underside reveals an 18k gold cage setting for the onyx, as well as details on the legs, demonstrating masterful workmanship. The piece is hallmarked 18k gold.
The piece features 89 rose-cut diamonds, for a total weight of 2.5 carats. The diamonds measure from 4.75 mm to 1.5 mm, the largest being at the center of the head. The diamonds are J-K-L color and SI clarity. The two ruby cabochons measure 2 mm.
The brooch measures 3 1/2” x 1 1/4” and weighs 42.7 g. The piece comes with its original antique box.
This piece can be worn on a chain as a pendant, as well as a brooch or scarf pin. Beetles are an ancient symbol representing strength and power, as well as change, transformation, and renewal.
