Refined Elgin watch with a white enamel dial. It features an hour track with black Arabic numerals and a more external track, with red Roman numerals and black dots, for the minutes. The seconds counter is at 6 o'clock. The hands are made of blued steel.
The movement is delicately hand-engraved and equipped with a lever escapement.
The case is marked Illinois Watch Case Co. "The Winner." It was one of the largest case manufacturers in the United States. It also operated under the name Elgin Giant Watch Case Co. from 1910, with the original intention of selling to foreign markets. In general, it marked its cases as follows (exceptions may exist):

Open Face Screw Back and Bezel : full assembly serial number stamped around the edge of the dial.

Swing-Ring : some cases feature the assembly number engraved in Roman numerals on the ring around the movement in various positions. This has been observed with the last four digits shown and the full serial number. Later cases are stamped with a full assembly serial number around the edge of the dial, similarly to other case styles from the company.

Hunting : Hunting cases are sometimes marked with an assembly number on the rear edge of the center of the case, generally with the last three, four, or five digits of the case serial number. Later cases are marked with the full serial number around the rear edge. In earlier cases, this marking appears near the hinge at the 8:00 position. In later cases, this marking appears closer to the 9:00 or 10:00 position. Some cases are seen with assembly codes in a vertically stacked arrangement rather than linear, especially later in production.
The main brand is generally positioned at the center of the back with the serial number just below, in a slight "U" shape. Some serial numbers on mass-produced nickel cases are visible in a straight arrangement, which generally indicates single-digit punching procedures.
Serial numbers extend up to around 9,310,000. However, with the recycling of lower serial numbers used on nickel cases, total production was probably higher than this number suggests.
