This superb Edwardian locket pendant is crafted in platinum and features three sheaves of wheat. In the background, a cascade of very fine lines in platinum gives the jewel an evocative beauty. The wheat is set with old-cut diamonds and, at the base of the sheaves, there is a transitional cut diamond of about 0.5 carats, creating a striking focal point. The finish is of remarkable quality: milgrain work adds sparkle to the wheat sheaves and lines, and a ribbon-like element suggests a fluid and graceful movement. The whole piece exudes great delicacy; the density of platinum allows for extremely fine lines and details while remaining very robust. The smallest diamonds are single cut and grain set; the high level of workmanship is visible on the back of the locket, which has tiny openings for each diamond to let the light through, as well as an 18k gold band that surrounds the back of the pendant.
The locket is suspended from an antique-style platinum chain, with delicate and alternating links. The links harmoniously match the openwork filigree of the Edwardian era, giving the whole a lacy appearance. The locket has a beautiful presence: it measures 1.75 inches in diameter, and is highlighted by this longer chain, which balances the size of the pendant.
Wheat is a symbol of abundance, prosperity, wealth, fertility, and renewal. It represents the cycle of sowing, growth, and harvest, and was often used as a symbol of marriage, with the wedding marking the start of a new life cycle.
The pendant contains approximately 1.10 carats of old natural diamonds. The large transitional cut diamond measures 5 mm in diameter and weighs about 0.5 carats. There are 53 single-cut diamonds, ranging from 1 to 2 mm in size, for a total weight of about 0.6 carats. The diamonds display a color of H to J and a clarity of VS2 to SI2.
