Horseshoes are trendy today in contemporary jewelry, but equestrian motifs have been present in jewelry since the Edwardian and Victorian eras. Most Edwardian horseshoe pieces were originally brooches; here, a brooch in platinum has been transformed into a pendant on a necklace.
The horseshoe is bead-set with 43 old mine cut diamonds, arranged to create a pattern of small V's along the edges of the platinum. The pendant has a nice weight and solid feel, as platinum is a heavier metal, and the whole piece is luxurious to wear.
What makes this piece so special is the selection of old mine cut diamonds. The 43 diamonds are well matched and graduated, each measuring from 1 mm to 2.5 mm. The diamonds are bright and lively, with large tables, G to J color, and VS1 to SI1 clarity. The fact that they are all old mine cut shows that this is a true Edwardian piece. The total diamond weight is about 1.75 carats (by formula).
