Hair comb, tiara, in tortoiseshell topped with an element in 18 Kt yellow gold (hallmark: eagle's head) with a Greek meander motif decorated with a fine border of black enamel.
Early 19th century French work, Empire style.

This antique comb is decorated with a Greek "meander." The Greek meander (Maiandros) is a motif that has existed since ancient Greece. It can be found on temples, vases, carpets, and jewelry from that era, as well as on neoclassical works from the First Empire in the early 19th century, such as this diadem.
The repetition of a meander forms a frieze called the Greek Key which symbolizes infinity due to its repetition.
