Lapis lazuli has been mined for more than 6,000 years in the mines of Afghanistan, the oldest in the world still in operation. Prized by the Egyptian pharaohs to adorn their jewelry and sarcophagi, this deep blue stone, sprinkled with golden flecks of pyrite, has passed through civilizations as a symbol of power and wisdom.
