Georgian pinchbeck muff chain necklace with hand clasp
Long pinchbeck necklace, with twisted rope-style links, featuring an elegant hand-shaped clasp at the end.
Pinchbeck is a rare metal alloy, once used in jewelry for its beautiful golden yellow color and affordable cost. It was worn as a "stagecoach" jewel, especially during long coach journeys, to reduce the risk in case of theft. Pinchbeck jewelry was made from copper and zinc, giving a bright yellow color that did not fade, unlike many other gold substitutes. Pinchbeck was invented by Christopher Pinchbeck, an 18th-century London clockmaker. His alloy became so popular that many pieces of jewelry were advertised as being pinchbeck without actually being so. Today, pinchbeck is a rare and highly collectible material.
- Length: 46 inches
- Hand clasp size: about 1 inch
- Weight: about 53 g
- Links with organic patterns creating texture along the entire length
- Can be worn doubled around the neck
- Clasp: hand with small purple beads and glass beads, clip system for opening and closing
- Original hand clasp from the 1820s-1840s, except for the tongue and groove which have been replaced to make the clasp functional
- Color: gold with a warm coppery undertone
The necklace retains its original shine; this metal alloy does not oxidize, which makes pinchbeck a particularly rare material.
