This Victorian 14K gold chain features a very interesting handmade link, composed of four rings connected to form a circle. The links alternate direction as they interlock, creating a chain with a braided appearance. The chain has fluted caps at each end, a necessary element for the construction of the round links and which also adds beauty to the design.
The chain ends in a Y shape at the bottom, and a unique section drops down to finish with a fluted clasp. From there, the chain connects to a spring ring and a removable tassel. The tassel is made of black enamel and features remarkable "bright cut" work in a Moorish-inspired pattern. A series of small wheat-style chains hang from the tassel, each ending with a small gold ball. Dated to around 1890, the chain displays a patina that enhances the antique quality of the piece.
This chain offers great versatility, as the tassel can be replaced with other pendants and charms. With its extra-long length and beautiful fluidity, this chain is a useful piece to add to a collection.
