Dating from the Georgian era, this 14-carat gold chain was originally used with a fur muff, allowing it to be worn around the neck so that hands could easily be slipped into the muff to keep them warm, as was fashionable in the 1820s. Today, it can be worn as a single chain necklace.
Each link is handmade and individually hammered, with a four-pointed star repoussé pattern that textures the links. The repoussé texture gives the link a matte surface and creates a chain with a warm appearance. Each link connects to two others, giving the chain layers that spiral around. The chain features a barrel clasp with a floral motif, like a bouquet, composed of floral elements and vines crossing as leaves. The inner layer of the clasp has a reddish patina that gives the gold a warm glow.
Georgian muff chains are rare and highly sought after by collectors of antique jewelry. Muff chains are always long so that the muff can be worn at hand level; for contemporary use, their length allows them to be worn long or doubled around the neck.
The chain is over 200 years old and is in very good condition considering its age. When acquired, the clasp was no longer working; a jeweler added a barrel clasp with a safety catch. Professional repairs have also been made to a few links (they are only visible upon close inspection).
