An emblematic figure of 20th-century jewelry, the Panthère has embodied the creative identity of Cartier for over a century, from its first appearance in 1914 to its definitive expression under the influence of Jeanne Toussaint. This sculptural pendant, created in 1981, illustrates the motif at the height of its great revival of the 1980s and ranks among the most important vintage Panthère pendants to appear on the market.
Modeled in solid 18-carat yellow gold, the panther is depicted in the famous suspended pose: the body supplely draped over its diamond-set bail, as if resting on a branch, with the limbs and tail hanging down with striking naturalism. Every curve testifies to the talent of Cartier in transforming precious metal into sculpture: the fluid line of the spine, the weight of the suspended limbs, the delicately modeled musculature brought to a mirror polish, in a balance between feline power and languid grace.
The panther's eye is set with a marquise-cut diamond, giving the animal its lively and attentive expression, while the bail is enhanced by a line of brilliant-cut diamonds, a refined sparkle that underscores the sculptural form without ever dominating it.
The pendant measures 4 cm in height and has a remarkable weight of 35 g. It is suspended from an original Cartier chain in Link double-knot curb links of exceptional presence: 90 cm in length and 113 g, wearable long or doubled for a layered effect. With a total gold weight of approximately 148 g, the ensemble possesses the extraordinary scale and presence that characterize the finest creations of the Maison of this period. The heavy-gauge chain is, in itself, a rarity that is seldom found together with its pendant.
