Playful Victorian brooch dating to around 1890, depicting a stylized bee or fly with finely engraved rose gold wings and details set in silver. Its body is adorned with rubies, rose-cut diamonds, and sparkling diamond chips, while a blue sapphire forms the center of the thorax. This little jeweled insect brings a deliciously mischievous touch to a lapel or shoulder, as if it had just landed there for a moment.
- Type of jewelry: brooch
- Condition: very good condition
- Country of origin: unknown
- Style: Victorian jewelry. This style refers to jewelry dating from approximately 1837 to 1901, in Great Britain and more broadly throughout the Western world. Typical characteristics include jewelry in gold and silver, ranging from hand-finished lockets to stamped pieces, set with garnets, turquoises, or star-set diamonds. Common motifs include snakes symbolizing eternal love, hearts, anchors, and crosses evoking love, hope, and faith, hands representing friendship and fidelity, forget-me-nots, ivy, acorns, and naturalistic flowers. This style was influenced by the reign of Queen Victoria, the Industrial Revolution and new technologies, the British Empire and global trade routes, the Great Exhibition of 1851, as well as archaeological excavations and research, notably at Pompeii and Troy.
- Style specifics: Grand Victorian. This jewel belongs to the Grand Victorian period, approximately between 1860 and 1880. This phase is often associated with more imposing jewelry, diamonds, pearls, dark stones, and mourning jewelry. The period followed the death of Prince Albert in 1861 and is closely linked to the mourning of Queen Victoria. At the same time, wealth, empire, and international influences, particularly from India and Japan, helped shape jewelry design.
- Period: circa 1890
- Source of inspiration: nature
- Theme: a stylized bee
- Material: 18K rose gold and details in silver, tested with a touchstone
- Diamonds: thirteen rose-cut diamonds and diamond chips. A diamond chip is a simplified rose-cut diamond, a small fragment of diamond possibly showing a few polished facets. The weight of the rose-cut diamonds and the diamond chips is unknown, which is common in the trade of antique jewelry for this type of diamond.
- All the diamonds in our antique antique jewelry and vintage pieces, regardless of their size or type of cut, are verified as natural by the IJGC laboratory.
- Gemstones: nine rubies with an approximate total weight of 0.36 ct, and one sapphire.
- All stated weights for colored stones are approximate, unless otherwise indicated, as the stones are not removed from their settings. Gemstones are often treated to improve their color or clarity. The stones in this piece have not been tested for treatments unless otherwise stated.
- Birthstones: diamond is the birthstone for April, ruby for July, and sapphire for September.
- Hallmarks: no visible traces.
- Dimensions: 4.20 cm x 2.70 cm.
- Weight: 7.50 g.
