18kt yellow gold brooch (hallmark: eagle's head) representing a mermaid.
Brooch part of a series of fourteen jewels designed by Jean Cocteau and produced by Fred, presented at the Lucie Weill gallery on December 7, 1965.
branded, numbered, monogrammed.
Manufacturer's hallmark of the Emile Raton workshop (manufacturer for Fred And Hermès among others).
Circa 1962-1965.

While it is not uncommon today for houses to be associated with artists, the maison FRED was one of the first to shake up the codes by collaborating with leading figures in the visual arts. In 1962, Fred Samuel transformed Jean Cocteau's poetic drawings into gold. Less than ten years later, he joined forces with Bernard Buffet to mount a butterfly on an enamel brooch, then, in 1979, worked with Miroslav Brożek.
