Elegant Victorian-era brooch in the shape of a scallop shell, inlaid with a floral motif in 14K gold and silver. The brooch is made of tortoiseshell, heated, shaped, and decorated with a floral motif in gold and silver. The gold and silver inlay has been polished to be flush with the surface of the shell, offering a beautiful contrast with the dark brown tone.
The back of the brooch bears the marking "JS", probably from a French maker. The piece measures approximately 1 1/2” x 1 1/2” at its widest points. It is in very good condition, but a bit of silver is missing, which is hard to notice as the absence is present on both sides.
Piqué is a technique of inlaying precious metals into tortoiseshell, introduced in England by the Huguenots when they were expelled from France in the 17th century. The term "piqué", meaning "to pierce", refers to the process of inlaying gold and silver into heated shell to create beautiful floral and leaf motifs, as well as geometric designs. This technique reached its peak during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is a process and art now lost, which makes a brooch from this period rare.
Circa 1860.
