An exceptionally refined Victorian brooch-pendant of Portuguese origin, dating from the late 19th century, crafted with great skill in the Portuguese tradition characteristic of gold jewelry enhanced with silver.
The jewel is designed as an elaborate ribbon bow, whose fluid openwork loops and cascading ribbons are pavé-set with approximately 2.00 carats of old-cut diamonds, all centered on a diamond-set knot from which hangs a pear-shaped imperial topaz of approximately 17 carats.
The topaz displays the highly sought-after golden-orange to honey hue associated with the famous deposits of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, the historic source of the finest imperial topazes in the world.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Brazilian gemstones were exported to Portugal, where they were transformed into jewelry intended for an aristocratic and wealthy European clientele.
Portuguese goldsmiths particularly distinguished themselves through their sumptuous bow and festoon motifs, often combining silver settings for diamonds with high-carat gold structures.
Made in 19.2-carat Portuguese gold and silver, this jewel embodies the romantic naturalism and technical sophistication of the Victorian era. The dynamic ribbon-shaped motif gives the jewel remarkable movement and lightness, while the articulated drop-shaped topaz draws every eye with its exceptional color and brilliance.
Combining the rarity of the materials, prestigious provenance, a significant gemstone content, and a highly decorative design, this brooch constitutes a remarkable example of Portuguese luxury jewelry from the final decades of the 19th century.
Comparable jewels from this period, set with imperial topazes and diamonds, continue to arouse strong interest among collectors of antique jewelry and Iberian decorative arts.
