French ribbon-bow brooch from the 1960s, made in platinum and 18K white gold, built around a central stone of exceptional gemological quality: an unheated oval Ceylon sapphire, of deep and saturated blue, accompanied by a pre-report from GEM-Paris attesting to its Sri Lankan origin and the absence of any heat treatment.
The composition takes its name from the French ribbon bow, a recurring motif in high jewelry since the 18th century, reinterpreted by each era according to its own sensibility. Here, in the vocabulary of the 1960s, the bow is rendered in a volumetric, almost sculptural form: two looped ribbons joined by a central knot, their surfaces densely pavé-set with rounded old-cut diamonds that animate the silhouette with continuous light.
From the knot descends a mobile pendant composed of a round old-cut diamond suspended above the oval sapphire. This mobility is deliberate: the slight movement of the pendant with the gestures of the person wearing it gives the brooch a discreet vitality that fixed compositions cannot match. The diamond measures approximately 7.9 × 7.8 × 5 mm; the sapphire approximately 7.8 × 7.9 × 7 mm, forming a substantial ensemble that anchors the lower part of the composition with weight and presence.
Unheated Ceylon sapphires are among the most sought-after categories by collectors of colored stones. The absence of heat treatment, verified by laboratory analysis, means that the stone retains its natural color, formed slowly in the earth without the human intervention that has become common in the modern sapphire trade. Combined with French craftsmanship of the 1960s and the classical elegance of the ribbon-bow motif, this brooch unites collection-level gemology with refined design.
