Around 1870, this French brooch features a central pink tourmaline, flanked by triangles set with rose-cut diamonds, along a horizontal pin in 18-carat gold. The oval-shaped tourmaline is bezel-set; it is an old stone with powder pink hues. Elongated triangles radiate around the stone, creating a triangle-within-a-triangle effect. The inner shape is in platinum, highlighting and enhancing the brilliance of the diamonds, which are grain-set around its perimeter. The outer triangle adds extra depth to the gold, for an elegant and well-balanced geometric pin.
The brooch bears an unidentified French hallmark, as well as an eagle’s head, the French hallmark for 18-carat gold. The tourmaline measures 8.5 x 7.5 mm and weighs approximately 2 carats. The 10 natural rose-cut diamonds have a total weight of 0.10 carat. The pin measures 2 3/8” x 3/16” and weighs 6.2 g.
The back of the pin shows traces of solder from an old repair. This piece would look great on the lapel of a denim jacket or a leather blazer.
