Grand Victorian brooch, circa 1870, designed as a diamond-set leaf within a circular frame. The body in red gold, the details in silver, and the openwork construction give the jewel both depth and lightness, while the old mine-cut diamonds, rose-cut diamonds, and chips create a lively and irregular sparkle. Naturalistic yet substantial, it reflects the period’s taste for botanical forms with an impression of richness, movement, and discreet sentiment.

  • Type of jewelry: brooch.
  • Condition: very good condition.
  • Country of origin: unknown.
  • Style: Victorian jewelry. This style refers to jewelry dating from approximately 1837 to 1901, in Great Britain and more broadly throughout the Western world. Typical characteristics include jewelry in gold and silver, ranging from hand-finished lockets to stamped pieces, set with garnets, turquoise, or star-set diamonds. Typical motifs include snakes symbolizing eternal love, hearts, anchors, and crosses evoking love, hope, and faith, hands for friendship and fidelity, forget-me-nots, ivy, acorns, and naturalistic flowers. This style was shaped by the reign of Queen Victoria, the Industrial Revolution and new technologies, the British Empire and global trade routes, the Great Exhibition of 1851, as well as archaeological excavations and research, notably at Pompeii and Troy.
  • Style specifics: Grand Victorian. This jewel belongs to the Grand Victorian period, approximately 1860 to 1880. This phase is often associated with more substantial jewelry, diamonds, pearls, dark stones, and mourning jewelry. The period followed the death of Prince Albert in 1861 and is closely linked to the mourning of Queen Victoria. At the same time, wealth, empire, and international influences, particularly from India and Japan, helped shape jewelry design.
  • Period: circa 1870.
  • Theme: leaf.
  • Material: 18K red gold and details in silver, tested with a touchstone.
  • Diamonds: five old mine-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 0.90 ct, color and clarity H/J, VS/I.
  • Additional diamonds: 72 rose-cut diamonds and chips. A chip is a simplified rose-cut diamond, a small fragment of diamond that may have a few polished facets. The weight of the rose-cut diamonds and chips is not available, which is normal in the trade for rose-cut diamonds and chips.
  • Total number of diamonds: 77 pieces.
  • The diamond weights and the color and clarity grades stated are approximate, unless otherwise indicated, because the diamonds are not removed from their settings in order to preserve the integrity of the piece.
  • All diamonds in our antique jewelry and vintage jewelry, regardless of their cut or shape, are verified by the IJGC laboratory as natural.
  • Birthstone: diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.
  • Hallmarks: no trace.
  • Dimensions: diameter approximately 3.20 cm (1.26 inch).
  • Weight: 12.80 g (8.23 dwt).
