The origin of Blackamoor jewelry dates back to ancient Venetian craftsmanship, highly intricate jewelry, international travel, and the interest in exotic luxury trade that took place in the 18th century. There have been several periods of revival for Blackamoor jewelry, but it is believed that the interest in the representation of 'moors' stems from the trade relations that the Venetians maintained with Afro-Arabs around 1750-1800. The Italian bourgeoisie wore these incredibly intricate and unusual pieces of jewelry to display their social status, knowledge, and openness to the Mediterranean world, and thus to international trade. These elaborate pieces were also considered as amulets. Today, these Blackamoor pieces are rare works of art, highly sought after by collectors, with a complex and often confusing history. Blackamoor jewelry is also known as Venetian Morretto jewelry, as they were made in Venice, Italy, where some of Europe's most renowned artists lived and worked.
Blackamoors are found in history as decorative art objects, and they experienced a revival period in the era of Art Deco, alongside orientalist representations of exotic bodies. This representation of moors or African slaves is very different from the originals. The earliest Blackamoor pieces range from highly ornamental creations to later pieces they inspired, sometimes sensitive. Georgian pieces like this one are considered true treasures.
This Blackamoor brooch stands out for its craftsmanship, history, and design. It features a central figure in gilded silver with black enamel, wearing a turban enameled in white and green. Two daggers cross behind him, forming an X. The handles of the daggers are finely crafted, decorated with three repeated heads, also painted in white, black, and blue enamel. The center of the daggers is decorated with wine-red garnets of about 1.5 mm. The brooch measures about 1 3/4 x 1 inch. The figures are remarkable, very small and very well rendered, with spectacular details. The enamel is excellent and in good condition. The brooch pin is also in gilded silver, like the rest. The piece is in excellent condition, especially considering its age. Circa 1840. Hallmarked on the clasp.
