Art Deco brooch in platinum set with diamonds, circa 1930, with a bold geometry and accompanied by an intimate history. Set with more than 10 ct of old European-cut, old brilliant-cut, and single-cut diamonds, it is preserved with its case, a handwritten technical sheet from 1932, and the black textile band once used to hold it behind a garment.

  • Type of jewelry: brooch
  • Condition: very good condition
  • Country of origin: unknown
  • Style: Art Deco
  • Period: circa 1930
  • Material: platinum with 18K white gold safety chain and steel safety pin
  • Hallmark: no trace
  • Dimensions: 6.05 cm x 4.11 cm
  • Weight: 14.70 g

The Art Deco style was one of the major movements of the 1920s and 1930s. In jewelry, it is particularly associated with platinum, diamonds, geometric compositions, architectural balance, and a modern elegance with clean lines.

This brooch clearly illustrates the Art Deco preference for geometry: a strong central circular form is set against rectangular side panels, the whole executed in platinum and diamonds. The design moves away from the fluid naturalism of Art Nouveau and favors symmetry, contrast, and disciplined ornament. The accompanying handwritten technical sheet, apparently dated October 24, 1932, fits well with this Art Deco character.

  • One old European-cut diamond of approximately 1.80 ct
  • Two old brilliant-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 1.00 ct
  • 30 old brilliant-cut diamonds with an approximate total weight of 4.92 ct
  • 130 single-cut diamonds, also called 8/8 cut, with an approximate total weight of 2.82 ct
  • Total number of diamonds: 163 pieces
  • Total diamond weight: approximately 10.54 ct

The central diamond shows estimated color and clarity grades of I/J, SI2. The other diamonds show estimated average color and clarity grades of G/J, VS/I.

All stated diamond weights, color grades, and clarity grades are approximate, unless otherwise stated, as the diamonds are not removed from their settings in order to preserve the integrity of the piece.

All diamonds in our antique jewelry and vintage jewelry, regardless of their cut or shape, are verified by the IJGC laboratory as natural.

Diamond is the birthstone for the month of April.

This brooch was acquired from its previous owner with its case, the handwritten technical sheet, and even the black elastic textile band that appears to have been used by the person who originally wore it. The band could be placed behind the garment, allowing the safety pin to pass through it and helping to keep the brooch securely in place.

The handwritten sheet appears to be dated October 24, 1932, and records several technical details, including the platinum setting, the weight of the brooch with its safety chain, and the individual measurements of several diamonds. Such preserved notes are rarely so elaborate, but they can be wonderfully revealing. They show that this jewel was not only worn, but also measured, documented, and carefully preserved.

What makes this brooch particularly charming is that these modest accompanying elements have remained with it: the jewel, the old note, the case, and even the practical little strip of black textile. They give the brooch a more personal history, bringing us unusually close to the way it was once owned, protected, and worn.
