Victorian-era mourning jewelry piece, these earrings are made of deeply carved black jet. They feature a leaf and tree branch motif on a textured background. Their oval teardrop shape makes them dangle.
They retain the original 14K gold wire setting, with a replaced "Euro wire" style hook. At the top of the oval teardrop shape are two rings connecting the piece to the gold support. The whole is carefully hand-assembled and in very good condition.

These earrings are made of Whitby jet, an organic material, a lightweight gemstone found on the beaches of Whitby in England. Jet was highly sought after at the time and remains expensive today. It was widely used in jewelry during the reign of Queen Victoria, who wore it as part of her mourning attire after the death of Prince Albert. Since then, jet has been associated with mourning and became very fashionable in Europe.
Jet is a type of lignite: it is not a mineral, but rather a mineraloid. It comes from wood transformed under extreme pressure.
