Victorian earrings recently sourced during a trip to Spain, featuring classic elements of Iberian jewelry. Circa 1880s or 1890s, entirely handmade.
The floral motif features a beautiful articulation that gives movement to the earrings and allows the lower part to be removed for day/night wear. At the top, a leaf holds a rose-cut diamond set on silver, surrounded by a gold "buttercup" setting. The lower part displays cascading leaves, echoing the floral motif that holds the diamond(s) in an antique-style bezel setting. A lovely patina brings a chiaroscuro effect between shadow and light. These earrings are worthy of a museum.
On the back, the handmade Iberian structure is visible, with looped wires connecting the three parts. The two lower elements can be removed, leaving only the upper "buttercup" part for a simpler daytime look. The earring wire passes through the lobe from the back and attaches at the front in the loop, following an antique design. The whole is lightweight: total weight 7.5 g. Dimensions: 2 1/8" x 11/16". The upper dangling part, which can be worn alone, measures 1/2". No hallmark. "Acid test" mention removed.
