These 21k gold earrings are made from Mexican pesos minted in 1898 and 1904. They feature the image of the Mexican eagle eating a snake, with the words "Republica Mexicana." The Mexican eagle holding a snake in its beak is part of the legend of Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City), a symbol of Aztec heritage. On the reverse side (not visible when worn) there is a simple design with the value surrounded by a wreath. A small ball hangs at the bottom of each earring, adding movement.
The pesos used in these earrings are rare: only 9,845 examples of the 1904 peso were minted at the Mexico Mint, and the 1898 peso had an even more limited mintage, with only 5,193 pieces struck at the Guanajuato Mint, making it a rare and highly collectible coin.
Each earring measures 9/16" in diameter and 13/16" high (1 1/8" from the top of the hook). Together, they weigh 3.9 g. Unmarked. The hooks are 14k gold.
