Historical context: the jewelry industry was heavily impacted by the outbreak of World War II in the 1940s. Precious metals, especially platinum, became scarce and, in some cases, were even banned from sale. Palladium was used as a substitute for platinum in the war effort. To make the most of the limited gold supply, a low-carat gold alloy with a higher proportion of copper was used. This resulted in gold with a subtly reddish hue, but through the use of different alloys, gold could display several colors within a single piece. Gold was also worked in different ways, including braided, twisted, and coiled forms. Techniques such as resilla, cannetille, and openwork filigree motifs reappeared in jewelry. Different textures were also used within the same design, with matte finishes juxtaposed with polished finishes to emphasize the pattern. Gold became the primary metal used in jewelry during the 1940s and 1950s.

Pearl: a precious gem of elegance and purity. Pearls, with their natural luster and timeless beauty, are among the most cherished gems in the world. Unlike other gemstones, pearls are organic and form within the soft tissues of mollusks such as oysters and mussels. Their formation results in a smooth, round gem with a soft, iridescent glow, often called a “nacreous essence.”

Historically, pearls have symbolized purity, wisdom, and wealth. In ancient Rome, they were considered the ultimate status symbol, while in ancient China, they were believed to protect against fire and dragons. During the Renaissance, pearls were so precious that they were reserved for royalty and nobility, symbolizing perfection and integrity.

In modern jewelry, pearls are appreciated for their classic elegance and versatility. They are found in a range of colors from traditional white and cream to rarer shades of black, pink, and gold. Pearls are often strung into necklaces, set in earrings, or used as delicate accents in rings and bracelets. Their softness, with a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4.5, requires delicate care, but their beauty and sophistication are unmatched.

Rose-cut diamond: a vintage gem of romance and light. Rose-cut diamonds are an elegant and romantic choice in jewelry, known for their domed appearance and soft sparkle. This antique cut, dating back to the 16th century, features a flat base and a domed top covered with triangular facets reminiscent of the petals of a rosebud.

Historically, rose-cut diamonds were highly prized during the Georgian and Victorian eras, often used in jewelry intended to be worn by candlelight, where their delicate sparkle added a warm glow. Unlike modern brilliant cuts, designed to maximize fire and brilliance, rose-cut diamonds offer a more subtle reflection of light.

14k gold: a durable choice for everyday elegance. 14k gold is a popular choice in jewelry, recognized for its durability, affordability, and beautiful color. “14k” means that the gold is composed of 58.3% pure gold and 41.7% alloy metals, such as copper, silver, nickel, or zinc. This combination creates a strong and resilient material, suitable for everyday wear.
