Around 1780, these 21K gold earrings are a beautiful example of Iberian pendant design, classically composed of a cluster, a bow, and a dangling element. They contain 26 rose-cut diamonds in a closed setting, which add a delicate sparkle to the high-karat gold. The upper element features a central diamond surrounded by a star motif with hand-engraved details, and is topped with a leafy lace pattern. Below is a fluid, stone-set bow with delicate filigree. The lower, pear-shaped element features another central rose-cut diamond, emerging from a dome within the star motif, with the same leafy lace element echoing the top of the earring. The earrings are articulated, and their hinge allows for movement and play of light. They are entirely handmade and feature classic Iberian construction and articulation.
The earrings contain 26 old natural rose-cut diamonds. The earrings measure 1 1/2” x 3/4”. Together, they weigh 9.7 g. These are "back to front" earrings: the wire enters the ear from the back of the lobe and locks onto a circle that holds the earring in place.
Acquired during a recent trip to Madrid, these Georgian earrings are very delicate and in remarkable condition for a piece nearly 250 years old, with slight traces of wear consistent with their age.
The Iberian Peninsula corresponds to present-day Spain, Portugal, and France, and constituted a powerful empire after the fall of the Roman Empire until Napoleon's invasion at the beginning of the 19th century. The coexistence of Jewish, Muslim, and Catholic communities fostered the fusion and mutual influence of their distinctive styles over time. Relics, crosses, and Moorish motifs are found in Iberian jewelry, with the influence of a rich intercultural artistic tradition. Portugal and Spain were international powers during the Renaissance, which enabled them to acquire gemstones from around the world through trade and conquest. This, along with the Portuguese gold rush, influenced the quantity of jewelry produced in Iberia, as well as the ornate manufacturing traditions passed down to the Georgian and Victorian eras, and still visible in antique and contemporary jewelry attributed to the Iberian Peninsula.
